Maha Shivaratri 🌙🕉️
Maha Shivaratri, which means “the Great Night of Shiva”, is a major Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Shiva, the destroyer and transformer in the Hindu trinity (Trimurti). It is celebrated on the 14th night of the new moon in the Hindu month of Phalguna (usually February–March).
Significance:
It marks the cosmic marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
It is believed that Lord Shiva performed the Tandava, the cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and destruction, on this night.
Devotees also observe it to attain spiritual growth, purification, and liberation (moksha).
How it is Observed:
Devotees fast or observe a partial fast throughout the day.
Night-long vigils (jagarans) are held in Shiva temples.
Rudrabhishek, a ceremonial bath of the Shiva Lingam with milk, honey, water, and bel leaves, is performed.
Devotees chant “Om Namah Shivaya”, recite Shiva mantras, and meditate.
Spiritual Belief:
Observing Maha Shivaratri with devotion is said to wash away sins, grant blessings, and fulfill wishes.
The night symbolizes the overcoming of darkness and ignorance in life.
